10 Predictions for 2009

By David Barr

A New Year is upon us and that means all kinds of new resolutions and predictions are floating around.

For my first resolutions I have vowed to abstain from originality, and to begin the process of fabricating wild statements that I can later deny ever making (in spite of evidence to the contrary). With that, I give you my Top 10 Predictions of 2009!

10 Predictions for 2009

Supplements

1. This will be the year of carnitine, as compelling evidence continues to emerge about this interesting compound. The ensuing carnitine wars will disrupt the lives of anyone who has ever shopped at a GNC.

Canadians will rightly complain about the fact that carnitine is still illegal in that country, but then calm themselves with legally available marijuana.

2. Tocotrienols will begin to get noticed as a novel form of Vitamin E, although it will be a year or so before they take prominence on the supplement stage. Interest in the nervous system, fat loss, and anti-aging, will help their emergence from supplement limbo.

3. Interest in leucine will continue to grow as the predominant nutrient regulator of muscle growth. BCAA's will still be useful, but a shift toward this single BCAA will become more apparent. Yet at the same time, no one will be able to agree on an optimal dosing protocol.

Team Staley

4. Charles will continue his dominance of the strength sports world, as he decides to don a kilt and toss around a gigantic stick. The difference is that this year he will do so outside the privacy of his own home.

5. Phil will still be huge and will set even more records in the deadlift -this time in a different weight class. Can a 700lb pull be far behind?

Unlikely Scenarios of the Year

6. In opposition to continued use of reason and evidence, millions of huge and ripped adolescent arginine users take to the streets to prove the effectiveness of "nitric oxide supplements". Thousands die as the resulting "extreme vasodilation and muscle pumps" induces a precipitous fall in cerebral blood pressure.

7. Already translated into 2 languages, The Anabolic Index becomes the standard nutrition series of Latin and ancient Chicomuceltec.

Nutrition

8. As carbohydrates become "new" again, people will begin to see the importance of personalization for diets. Muscles will be fuller, energy levels higher, and performance better as a result of subsequent glycogen storage.

9. Having run out of macronutrients to reduce for fad diets, micronutrition becomes the next target. Water and vitamin C will become labeled as the worst potentiators of fat gain, and their erroneous restriction will be the source of numerous books (and subsequent hospital visits for dehydration and scurvy).

Performance and Recovery

10. The athletic world is turned on its head as we begin to explore the completely untapped power of the nervous system. The revolution begins with my next book, and things will never be the same again.
