One nice thing I also noticed is that Vince backs up his statements with RESEARCH. This is often lacking in a lot of programs I've read (definitely a nice change of pace!). Here's one example that stood out to me...in the book, Vince cites a new study by Dr. Bente Stallknecht and colleagues, from the University of Copenhagen. They discovered that spot reduction IS possible by isolating certain muscle groups, combining cardio, and boosting hormones that accelerate fat metabolism and elevate fat tissue temperature during exercise. So what Vince did was take this research and apply it to REAL-WORLD training for you so you know exactly how to take it to the gym and actually DO it. And this is just one example - he covers studies like this for many aspects of training, nutrition and supplementation. This isn't a guessing game program backed by fancy marketing - this is effective science-based training information. Another thing that jumped out at me was Vince's approach to weight training - explosive weight training in particular. I don't see a whole lot of fat-loss programs that make it a POINT to train with explosive exercises. I know from experience, this is very effective stuff. Vince goes to great lengths in the book to address the hormonal aspects of fat-loss (I won't list those here or this email may not ever get to you!). This is often missing from fat-loss programs - nutrition and exercise are only part of the equation - knowing how to make the best use of your body's hormonal REACTIONS to that nutrition and exercise is a factor not often taken into account. There are a number of things in the book that I don't agree on with Vince, but these are generally minor and nothing that sends up red flags, that's for sure. For example, Vince states that he has yet to see anyone achieve six-pack abs without doing more than 20 minutes of cardio 3 times a week. Personally, I HAVE seen people get ripped without ANY "formal" cardio training at all! Naturally, this can vary by individual and by training and eating regimens but it is possible. What I definitely DO agree with him on is that when you DO perform cardio, it should be done intensely - as he puts it "I CAN TELL YOU THAT IF YOU'RE NOT LEAVING A PUDDLE OF WATER AND A TRAIL OF SWEAT AFTER YOUR CARDIO WORKOUTS THEN YOU'RE ALMOST WASTING YOUR TIME. GOING TO THE GYM IS ABOUT INVESTING TIME, NOT SPENDING TIME." I also liked to see a time-management section in the book - e.g. how to put this plan to work for you if you have 3 hours a week available if you have 3 to 5 hours available to you if you have 5 to 7 hours available to you. This approach will allow you to get the best results for the time you've got. Nutrition-wise, it looks to me like Vince is right on the money. He's got excellent tips for eating for fat loss as well as some very well-put-together meal plans. He takes advantage of carb-cycling and calorie-cycling to really help keep the metabolism firing for continuous fat-burning while sparing muscle mass. His approach to supplementation is a sound one, favoring a "food-based" supplement program (things like fish oil, protein, greens, etc.) rather than a magic pill that people think is going to do all the hard work for them. We think alike on this one for sure. When you look at the training programs included in the program, you'll notice he bases the VAST majority of the work on compound exercises (i.e. multi-joint stuff like squats, snatches, push-ups, etc.). It's a good approach - the specifics (set and rep schemes, etc.) are obviously going to be different that what I use in my own programs but overall, from my experience, I can see the weight programs being very effective for the major goal, which is fat loss.
Vince has put together an EXCELLENT fat-loss package here. He's covered pretty much every major aspect of fat-loss that you need to know in order to really get maximum results, no matter what your level. If you're looking to refocus your efforts and really see those six-pack abs that are hiding on you, I can most definitely recommend this manual. It's good stuff and will get the job done.
